The grill can get very hot which is nice for a steak but easily burns food as well if you're not paying enough attention. Both sounded sides develop less heat which can be nice to place food which didn't require as much heat as a steak.
So I think the BBQ set is doing a bet good job but it requires some test runs to find out Gove to get your stuff bbqed to perfecting.
The only disappointing thing is the hood lock for transportation! This flimsy steel pin is too short and not strong enough!!! It alludes to the centre position and when you roll your bbq on Les even surface the pun bends a bit, the hood opens and the heavy grates falling off! That's horrible and I wonder that Coleman didn't check on that safety feature because my 3 year old son who walked behind me got 1 grate on his foot and got a big bruise but luckily nothing more. Now I secure the hood with a strong rubber strap which is of course ugly but fits the purpose!
Coleman, change your lock and you may get 5 stars instead of 4.
However, aside from the scratches it was easy to assemble, pretty sturdy, like the pull-out side shelves, side handles, foldup stand, portability and over all quality met my expectations. The grill started right up and really heated up quickly using the screw-on small Coleman propane bottle. I purchase the adaptor hose to use with a 5 gallon propane cylinder or connect to the travel trailer grill gas port connection. I'll put it through a test this weekend.
Bottom line, it does what is advertised and it is portable, both of which were must-haves to me. I'm satisfied with the purchase and have accepted it will take extra time to clean up before transport. So, here are my thoughts on the Roadtrip 285.
Tip: most importantly - it definitely takes practice to get used to cooking on this grill - if you cook on anything but low on all 3 burners you will burn your food. I frequently grill with only the center burner or only the 2 side burners. Absolutely recommend practicing with less expensive foods like burgers and dogs a few times before getting creative.
Pros - It's light weight, easy to assemble and folds into a relatively small-ish space with wheels for rolling; with 3 burners it heats up very quickly (and I do mean VERY - like 0 to 500F in 3 minutes); it has plenty of cooking space and has various grill tops that swap out easily; cooks very well once you are used to it; can use both 1 lb and 15 lbs (with attachment) propane bottles.
Cons - takes quite a bit of time to clean up after use or before moving; water pan makes a royal mess if you forget it is there when you move grill and end up sloshing water/grease all over your feet and the ground; pain in the butt trying to find somewhere to dump water pan contents after cooking; plastic handles are cheaply made and installed; hinges seem extremely flimsy and are loose after 2 months of use (poor design with cheap rivets); locking mechanism for lid is a very poor design and mostly ineffective (I now use a bungee cord); will empty a 1 lb propane bottle grilling 2 meals; it's pretty darn expensive ($$$) for what it actually is (I'm thinking it should be in the $150 price range.)
