The earlier model only required a quick touch of the power button to turn the unit on/off.
The new model requires a touch-hold to turn the unit on or off.
I add soap just until the bottom of the viewing window and then add water. Give it a good mix before locking the top into place.
1.) It worked for about a month then suddenly stopped dispensing soap. So I fixed it by changing the ratio of soap to water. Sometimes that would work & sometimes it wouldn’t. My partner would have to suck the straw out to get all the built of soap/water that got stuck in there somehow. Basically a lot of maintenance work.
2.) after given up consistently fixing it over the months, I figured to open it to see if it’s the batteries & come to find out the water got into the batteries & completely rusted the source of power. Manufacturing needs a better build since water was easily accessible to the batteries.
I never had these issues with my previous soap dispenser from a different vendor so I am confident it’s just this specific product.
DO NOT BUY.

------------
I bought this and two other foaming soap dispensers about a month ago and have been using in kitchen and bathroom. This isn't my fav or the three, but it does the job. Here's what I do/don't like about this one:
Pros - slender, so doesn't take up a lot of space, sensor's not so close to spicot, easy to fill, can use diluted DR. BRONNER'S soap, and atrractive.
Cons: sensor placement is over the spicot, which points straight down, so I end up touching unit sometimes, slender base means it toips over easily, and the ugly stickers on top.
Initially I had to return one that just stopped working for no apparent reason after refilling the soap. That’s when I realized that you must be VERY careful not to let any soap or water even touch the top when you put it back on And certainly don’t ever run any water over it! (the instructions do state about not using running water, but they don’t emphasize this enough that I noticed it. It should be in BOLD letters on the front of the box and even with a sticker on the dispenser). The battery compartment is right there practically touching where you fill the soap and is not at all well protected; it needs to have a waterproof barrier but it doesn’t.
So I returned that one and now I knew to be careful. And I mean extremely careful!! For example, if the dispenser gets dusty or has soap residue, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE run any water over any part of it. Use a damp (and not wet) cloth to clean it. Once I put just the tip under running water for maybe 15 seconds to help get the built up soap off (thinking surely, it’s just the tip and I’m being careful)..NOPE. DON’T DO IT. It has seams in the plastic - even there!! - where water got through and it stopped working. The water got into the top and somehow into the battery compartment and it was dead. Luckily this time I was able to dry it out with a hair dryer and shaking the water out by force and eventually it started working again. At first it just discharged over and over, but after taking out the batteries and replacing them several times, it has been working well for a couple of weeks.
I had also bought one for a friend for her birthday, and she just gave it back to me, not working, and asked me to return it. Of course it’s been 6 months so the return window is up. I looked in her battery compartment and it was wet so I tried to dry and shake, dry and shake - but this one would not come back to life. Now I’m trying to decide - do I buy her another? I’m thinking no. Because while I LOVE this thing when it’s working, eventually you have to change the soap or the batteries, and it’s often enough not a smooth process where it just works again immediately to make it worthwhile.
So the upshot is this: It’s a beautiful design in terms of looking nice sitting on your counter. It’s a very poor design in terms of “normal” use (cleaning, or changing soap or batteries) that often enough causes issues that are at best a pain and at worst causes it to completely stop working. It works beautifully when it works, the problem is that it’s way too easy to make it stop working, even when you are trying to be careful.
